Ted's Morris Minor set to be a real money spinner

Cambridge Evening News
July 2001

A teacher is giving students a spin around the school grounds in his 70-year-old car - to boost funds for a school project.

Pupils and staff at Hills Road Sixth Form College will pay for the privilege of taking a cruise around the college quad in the pride and joy of Ted Coney, head of art and design.

The much-loved Morris Minor has taken Mr Coney to the Cambridge school for the last 30 years and will be used on Friday, July 13, to raise cash for a new conservatory designed by students at the school.

So far, £10,000 has been raised for the project but an extra £5,000 is needed so Mr Coney decided to get his beloved car involved.

Ten years ago he used it to raise £2,500 for photographic darkroom equipment and hopes to help out the conservatory project in a similar way.

The new conservatory will be used as a study centre by both day and evening students, as well as for art exhibition space.

Mr Coney said: "This is the final push and I am delighted my car can help as it did 10 years ago."

To mark the Morris Minor's 70th birthday, principal Colin Greenhalgh presented Mr Coney with a pair of silver wings to fit onto the cherished car's radiator cap.

Anybody who would like to make a donation to the conservatory scheme should send it to Mr Coney at Hills Road Sixth Form College, Hills Road, Cambridge, CB2 2PE, with cheques made payable to Hills Road Sixth Form College.
