Morris steers towards its 60th birthday bash

Cambridge Evening News
July 1991

Major celebrations are planned this week for a cherished 60-year-old Morris Minor used as everyday family transport.

Teacher Ted Coney - who bought the car 20 years ago for £100 - uses it to travel between his Great Shelford home and Hills Road Sixth Form College, where he is head of art.

And on the day it reaches pensionable age - Friday - the Morris Minor will be working flat out.

For the same day is the 20th anniversary of Mr Coney's arrival at the school.

And he is celebrating by offering rides in his much loved car at £1 time round the school quadrangle to try to raise £2,000 to equip the college's new darkroom.

The Morris is the only family car owned by the Coneys, who live in Woollards Lane, and who have three children.

"It is a very silly car for someone with three children," said Mr Coney cheerfully.

When the family goes on holiday, he drives the Morris laden with luggage and the rest of the family, for whom there is no room, go by train.

"When they grumble I threaten to sell it and they all shut up," he said.

He is now very attached to the car, which needs double de-clutching for gear changes, and he has no thoughts of changing it. "If we got a bit richer we would get a sensible car as well."

The car's colour had been changed before he bought it, but he has now had it resprayed its authentic grey and black.

Mr Coney plans a celebratory run next week for the car's 60th birthday. He, his son and the Morris Minor are off to see the beauties of Constable country.
